WHY SPAY AND NEUTER?

Most of the time, pet owners often hear from other pet owners about spaying and neutering. These two procedures are normally done to pets for a number of reasons. Spaying is done on female pets while neutering is done on male pets. There are advantages to having your pets spayed or neuter and this would benefit both you and your pet in the long run. Here are some of the advantages of spaying and neutering:

  1. A neutered male pet has a lower risk of contracting testicular cancer while spayed female pets have a lower risk of contracting breast cancer. It is a common disease among pets especially those who were not neutered or spayed. Neutering and spaying is a good procedure to avoid such disease.
  2. Spayed female pets tend to be healthier after the procedure. There is a common misconception that spayed female pets have erratic behavior after spaying but this is not true.
  3. There will not be issues of unwanted litter of puppies or kittens. This is beneficial for both the pet and the pet owner especially if the pet owner does not have the capability to take care of more animals. It saves everyone the pain of abandoning innocent animals.

WHAT WE CAN DO FOR YOUR PET

It is best to bring your pet in for spaying or neutering at a young age. For dogs, the age might differ depending on the dog’s size. Most commonly, pets are spayed or neutered before their first heat. It is quite difficult to say if the pet is in heat especially if it is your first time to take care of a pet. On average, most pets can be neutered or spayed around 6-12 months. Some do the procedure later at 9-18 months old.

Spay and Neuter Fort Lauderdale makes sure that the pet has their records with them when they get in for spay or neuter. This is a way for us to see if the procedure is appropriate for them or not. It is also best to consult your veterinarian first before going in for the procedure. Once all records are in adn your pet is in the clear to undergo the procedure, they will be given anesthetics to not feel the pain of the surgery. Your pet would be asleep during the procedure so rest assured that they are not feeling pain while being spayed or neutered. After the procedure, they would be a little bit groggy from the anesthesia but will return to their usual selves after an hour or two.

After the procedure, it is best to observe your pet. Check if there are changes in their behavior, eating habits, etc. If they seem to lose interest in eating, it is best to have them checked with the veterinarian immediately. It would also be helpful to watch over their surgical wound so it will not get infected.
